EU GDPR Directive

What is the GDPR?

The GDPR is an EU regulation to improve the protection of personal data of EU citizens and to increase the obligations of organizations that collect or process personal data. These new regulations come into force on May 25, 2018. The regulation significantly improves the data protection and data security of our customers and extends their exercisable rights, allowing greater control over their personal data. The full specification of GDPR rights and regulations can be found here. Today, data protection law impacts organizations and governments worldwide. With the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018, the EU has implemented a higher level of protection than most other countries. The GDPR has introduced changes to previous data protection laws, particularly in areas such as consent, notification requirements, internal procedures, accountability and sanctions.

What do data protection and data security mean?

Data protection and data security are both concerned with the processing of data. Data security focuses on protecting assets from unauthorized use, while data protection defines who is authorized to access the data in the first place. An important difference is who controls which part. With data privacy, the control rights lie largely with the user (i.e. the user can control what data is shared and with whom), whereas data security is primarily the responsibility of the company.

What is personal data?

Personal data is any data that can be traced back to a natural person. Everything you do online - from creating a Facebook account to posting a photo on Instagram - leaves a digital footprint. Even if this seems small, it adds up and, without protection, is vulnerable to personal data being shared with third parties. Fortunately, data protection law focuses on safeguarding the rights of the individual.

Does the GDPR also apply to me?

Yes, the GDPR also applies to you, even if you are located outside the EEA (European Economic Area). It applies to any company that a) markets its products to individuals in the EEA or b) monitors the behavior of individuals in the EEA. In other words, even if you are based outside the EEA, the GDPR applies to you if you control or process the data of EU citizens.
